13 Best Fest '10 Oregon Convention Center, Portland. Best Fest brings together university researchers and industry leaders engaged in the sustainable built environment and renewable energy sectors for an all-day networking event and research. Note: The Legislative Committee meetings are typically scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month, and the schedule will return to normal in October. Starting in September and continuing through its fall monthly meetings (second Wednesday of each month), the committee will discuss and review a wide range of legislative concepts currently under discussion for the 2011 Oregon Legislative Session. 21–23 AGCA Safety Management Training Course Philadelphia, Penn. The AGC Safety Management Training Course (SMTC) provides attendees three days of training on the basic skills needed to manage a company safety program in the construction industry. The program builds on Focus Four training and prepares attendees to manage key safety issues on the job site and provides techniques for delivering basic safety training to field personnel. Participants will receive intensive instruction and training that will allow them to return to their firms with readily applicable new skills to positively impact their company’s safety and health program. Topics covered include: OSHA inspections, subcontractors & multi–employer relations; job safety analysis; equipment management; steel erection safety; electrical safety management; accident investigation; excavation management; concrete safety; fall protection management; and bi–lingual issues. 22 Specialty Contractors Core Council Meeting 1–3 pm, AGC Center, Wilsonville. All specialty/subcontractor members are invited to participate in the chapter’s Specialty Contractors Council meetings. Find out what is going on locally and nationally with specialty contractors. Help identify key concerns and issues to help develop future training and education topics and best business practices. 22–23 Central Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Conference: Fork in the Road? Choose Safety Eagle Crest Resort, Redmond, Ore. The Central Oregon Safety and Health Association and Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA), a division of the Department of Consumer and Business Services, encourage workers and employers to attend the conference to help improve safety and health performance. Transforming the workplace safety culture can help organizations reduce injuries and accidents, and decrease workers’ compensation costs. Some of the topics featured at this year’s conference include: safety committees and safety meetings, hazard communication, winter driving tips, and waste management and recycling certification. Registration for the event is $125, with optional pre-conference workshops for $40. The Waste Management and Recycling certification workshop is $75. 23–25 CLC National Working Weekend Kansas City, Missouri. This year’s annual event for mid-career professionals promises to be our best ever, with great speakers, social networking opportunities, and two jobsite tours – both a groundbreaking performing arts center and an iconic bridge. The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) National Working Weekend is designed to connect AGC’s mid-career professionals from across the nation. The purpose of the CLC is to act as a conduit for participants to network and exchange ideas about work and the industry while continuing to develop their professional and leadership skills. There has been an earthquake somewhere nearly every month in 2010. Join an intriguing CE presentation on the Cascadia Subduction Zone and learn how you can better understand earthquake risk in Oregon. The presenter is James Roddey, Earth sciences information officer with the Oregon Department of Geology and Minerals, or, as he calls himself, the “prophet of doom.” $25 registration fee, September 30 deadline. 14 Portland Construction Leadership Council Billiards Tournament 5:30–8:30 pm, The Uptown Billiards Club, 120 NW 23rd Ave., Portland. Sign up as a two-person team or an individual for a five-game, round robin Eight Ball tournament. Prizes will be awarded for first and second place, and everyone is eligible for door prizes. 18–20 2010 AGCA Training & Development Conference & HR Professionals Conference Scottsdale, Arizona. Last year, the conferences were held concurrently with many overlapping sessions. This year, the conferences will have one full day of sessions each, plus one joint plenary session, along with several opportunities for participants at both conferences to network socially. This adjustment will allow participants to attend each or both conferences, without having to choose between HR and T&D sessions. As many budgets are still financially strained, and to assist our chapters and member companies who would like to send two or more participants, a discount will be available for those who choose to attend both conferences.
